Who can confidently say what ignites a certain combination of words, causing them to explode in the mind? Who knows why certain notes in music are capable of stirring the listener deeply, though the same notes slightly rearranged are impotent?"
This is one of my favourite quotes from The Elements of Style, Strunk and White's seminal text for editors. There is a certain mystery and magic in writing. But there is also a method. As an editor, whether I am working with fiction or non-fiction, I love nothing more than to bring together the method and the magic of words to help authors create their best work.
What others have said about Erika's work...
Every writer wants to produce a completed manuscript that has taken them to the limits of their abilities – it’s why we draft and redraft and polish until we can do no more. A talented editor will help you achieve this, but editors like Erika Westman help break through that barrier by encouraging you to push your imagination and skills beyond their capabilities. Erika’s ethos is write your best work, and working with her on my novel ‘The Judgement of Moses Crowe’ was an edifying experience that brought deeper meaning to these words." Erika Westman has worked in an editorial capacity on numerous projects of mine, including a 360-page book manuscript, academic journal articles, grant applications, and poetry. She is thoughtful, empathetic and efficient in everything that she does, offering a combination of attention to detail and intellectual rigour that is hard to match. I know that if Erika says that something is ready for publication, it is undoubtedly ready to send out into the world." Dr. Alan McDougall, University of Guelph
You made an enormous contribution to our work, with your calm, focused approach and very astute reading of the vagaries of a document with many authors. It was a challenging project, and your editing and structuring advice turned our many disparate pieces into a coherent whole." Elise Houghton, Environmental Education Ontario
It's great -- you really nailed it." Michele Patterson, WWF-Canada
